Arizona told him about the report, including photographic evidence and radio call recordings. Her voice broke when she mentioned the photographs. During every moment of interaction they’d shared so far, she hadn’t once cried or drooped with defeat. Discussing the images?

The memory cut her. Instead of focusing on the details she’d shared, he’d noted them mentally then held her hand. The chill on her flesh and the faint dilation to her pupils suggested shock. Preferring action to concern, he moved them into the living room, wrapped her in a blanket, and got a fire going. The temps were dropping outside. Then, Arizona wrapped herself around his heart when she fell asleep, holding his hand—after she thanked him.

What had she said? “Thank you for being a stand-up guy,” she’d yawned. “For not turning out to be someone who wanted to kill me…but more, just for believing me.”

The absolute loneliness in her voice wrenched him. Even when he worked a mission with his team, and they moved in absolute silence, he wasn’t alone. No SEAL was alone. They always had each other’s backs.

Why the fuck hadn’t someone had this woman’s back?

Glancing to where she curled on her side, her face open and vulnerable as the firelight played over it, Mickey wanted a specific target to eliminate. He’d bet a hundred bucks the members of the Bulwark team mentioned in the report were behind the two assholes at the rest stop.

A quiet campaign of terror, of isolating her—they’d driven her out of town. Clean and simple would have been a double tap to the head. Those guys hadn’t done that, instead they’d scared her, left her jumping at shadows, and she’d run. Only, he’d throw in the additional wager they hadn’t counted on her being good at hiding from them.

Stop staring at the pretty lady and get to work. Shaking off the need to literally watch over her, he made sure the fire had plenty of wood before walking the perimeter. The sun had set the hour before, and it was still early evening. Arizona’s exhaustion would hopefully let her sleep for the next few hours. Satisfied, he spot-checked that the alarm remained armed before heading into the office.

Joe kept his cabin well stocked. An armory was locked behind a wall panel which required a code to unlock. Only a half-dozen men had the combination. There were also burner phones, charged and ready to go. Mickey would replace whatever he used once the mission was complete.

The mission…settling in at the desk, he opened his laptop and set up the satellite connection.
